NorCal Lighthouses
Lighthouse update: Traversing the Northern California coast over the last couple weeks, I found time to hit a few good ones. Point Cabrillo, Point Arena, and Battery Point. Point Cabrillo (just north of Mendocino) has preserved all of the old lighthouse keeper homes and are now offering them as rentals! I couldn't afford to stay there this time around, but if the interiors are as beautiful as the exterior architecture, I'd certainly love to. Point Arena is the tallest on the west coast (well, tied with Pigeon Point, both 115m tall), and in 1908 was the first lighthouse built with steel rebar reinforcement after the original brick tower was heavily damaged by the 1906 earthquake. It's a fun climb to the top with super unique views. Battery Point in Crescent City is pretty unique too in that it's on a small island that's only accessible during low tide! Last pic here is of the small sandbar leading out to the island; it's underwater at high tide. Lighthouses are such great catalysts for adventure and always an opportunity to learn more about this unique (and extremely important) slice of history, and I'm excited to seek out more of them as I continue north up the coast.
