While searching for a BMW 2002, I really only had three major requirements. It had to A) be in good running order, B) have a manual transmission, and C) have a black interior. I've always had a vividly clear picture in my mind of what the interior would look like when imagining myself driving a 2002, and one of the aspects of this car that I'm really excited about is the journey to create that perfect interior.

Here are some shots of the current initial condition. It's actually really good, especially compared to other cars I looked at in my price range. The dash needs a good cleaning but it's free of cracks, the side vinyl paneling is all in excellent shape with no damage, the carpet is new, and although the rear seat is gone it's finished nicely in carpet.

I do still have a nice to-do list ahead of me though: The modern bucket seats it has now are comfy but I want something more authentic looking. I've got my eye on some reproduction period-styled seats in black leather. The center console will be replaced with a longer version that also came as an option on these cars, along with the correct shift boot and knob. Gauge cluster will be replaced with a slightly different version (all black) which also became available in late '71, and the steering wheel will likely be a black Nardi Classic (plus a horn button). And then of course an overall deep cleaning and polishing of all the trim pieces and fixing/replacing knobs and other small stuff. The headliner ideally probably needs replacing too, but I never look up anyway! The list goes on, but those are the main highlights for now.

Installing audio is also part of the plan, but not immediately. The car currently has zero speakers or stereo or even a mounting location for them, which is the way I’ll keep it for now. Eventually though I do have big plans for a "stealth" audio setup to retain the clean and classic look, but more on that at a later date.
